IEEE STUDENT BRANCH OFFICE BEARERS MEETING AND IEEE DAY CELEBRATION
IEEE Madras Section organized the IEEE Student Branch Office Bearers Meeting on 15th October 2022 at TAG Auditorium, Anna University Chennai. The event, attended by 75 vibrant Section members, was inaugurated by Dr. K. Porkumaran, Chairman for IEEE Madras Section (MAS). He welcomed everyone and shared the Section’s activities and valuable events in 2022. Following that, Dr. R. Hariprakash, Secretary for IEEE MAS, addressed the importance of being an IEEE Member. Then, the office bearers meeting kickstarted with Dr. P. Sakthivel (Vice-Chair), Dr. D. Nirmal (Awards Committee Chair), Dr. S. Brindha (Student Activities Chair), Mr. M. Arun (YP Chair), Dr. S. Radha (Treasurer) and Mr. B. Ashvanth (YP Vice Chair) sharing their thoughts and views on empowering and rewarding student branches in terms of awards and opportunities, action plan, newsletter reporting, SB funding opportunities from Section and other IEEE sources, practical tools for student branch and website hosting and other informative content for their student branch upliftment. Eight student branches presented their activities and shared their unique best practices followed at their SBs.
The much-awaited segment of the day which is the IEEE Day 2022 Celebrations followed. About 150 members participated in this celebration. The event started with the welcome address and briefing on the event highlights by Dr. K. Porkumaran, Chairman for IEEE MAS. Dr. P. Sakthivel, Vice-Chairman for IEEE MAS, introduced the Chief Guest. Dr. Vaidehi Vijayakumar, Vice-Chancellor of Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal delivered the keynote address. Following this, IEEE Madras Section honored Mr. CR. Sasi, senior life member and former chair of IEEE Madras Section, and Shri. Sundaresh S, Chair for LMAG Madras Section, for their contribution to the Section and society. The celebration was carried forward with the much-awaited cake-cutting ceremony to mark its celebration for 2022. The event then witnessed the young achievers’ awards of the IEEE Madras Section in distinct categories for the year 2022 for the members’ contributions towards IEEE. Madras Section also recognized IEEE Members with publication awards for those who have published their research articles in IEEE Transactions & Journals. With this, the vibrant celebration and event came to an end.
STEP 2022: SKILLUP TO EMPOWER PROFESSIONAL CAREER
IEEE Madras Section Young Professionals hosted their flagship event, “Step 2022 – Skill up to Empower Professional Career”, on 19th November 2022 at Sri Sairam Engineering College, Chennai. Step 2022 was an enlightening event about IEEE opportunities and expanded the benefits of being an IEEE Member. The event was sponsored by IEEE Young Professionals, IEEE Madras Section, IEEE MAS Product Safety Engineering Society, IEEE MAS Photonics Society, IEEE MAS Communication Society, IEEE MAS Computer Society, IEEE MAS Professional Communication Society, IEEE MAS Society on Social Implications of Technology, IEEE MAS Education Society, IEEE MAS IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society, IEEE MAS Life Member AG, and IEEE MAS Women in Engineering AG. The event started with the inauguration and by welcoming the participant volunteers and speakers who are the event’s highlight and by taking the pledge on the code of ethics.
The session started with the eye-opening session of Dr. Porkumaran K., Chairperson of IEEE Madras Section who gave the participants a vision of the opportunities in IEEE. Following this, Dr. R. Hariprakash, Secretary of IEEE Madras, gave a talk on the opportunities in IEEE Madras Section Membership Development Committee. Mr. Arun M., Chairperson of IEEE Madras Section Young Professionals and Executive Committee member, inspired the students with the funding opportunities in IEEE Madras Section. Dr. Brindha S, Chairperson of IEEE Madras Section Student Activity Committee, gave a talk on the opportunities for students in IEEE MAS SAC. With the fantastic four sessions, the participants were enlightened with another fabulous session, starting with Mr. Sreekanth, Student Branch Counselor of IEEE Student Branch St. Joseph Engineering College and Executive Committee member, sharing about how societies can play a major role in professional growth.
Mr. Shyam, CEO and founder of Tamilpreneur, inspired the audience with his inspirational life incident, shared his thoughts on the changing point of his career, and discussed opportunities for Young Professionals. Mr. Ashwanth, Vice Chairperson of IEEE Madras Section YP, cleared up on soft skills development and workplace culture, which relates to soft skills the most. With a closure, Dr. Chittibabu, faculty at the Indian Institute of Design and Manufacturing and a Senior Member of IEEE, gave a keynote on patents, publications, and research opportunities of IEEE. Vignesh, Mr. Heyram, Ms. Indhumathi, Ms. Angayarkanni, and Ms. Nandhita Kalyanasundaram also had a wonderful interactive session with the participants. Each of them expressed their thoughts and shared their insights on various topics. Finally, the event ended with Mr. Abdul Halik M I, Secretary of IEEE Madras Section YP, thanking all the participants and volunteers for their presence. The participants gained more knowledge on IEEE and had a great chance to expand their networking. The key takeaways from the event were the benefits of continuing IEEE membership after graduation, what IEEE Young Professionals offers, networking skills, improved knowledge of IEEE among student members, awareness on the opportunities and benefits of
IEEE, and various Student Branches collaborating and implementing their active participation.
