R10 Large Section – IEEE Malaysia Section

IEEE Malaysia Section was formed on 28th July 1985 with 400 members from both industry and academia. As of September 2021, IEEE Malaysia section has 2,783 active members. IEEE Malaysia Section consists of 3 subsections, 24 technical chapters, 2 council chapters, 3 affinity groups, 30 student branches, and 17 student branch chapters. Over the past 36 years since establishment, IEEE Malaysia Section has developed into a thriving organization and has experienced various phases of development. IEEE Malaysia Section with its technical chapters has successfully organized major events ranging from conferences and technical talks to social events. Some of the major events organized in the past include Region 10 Conference (TENCON) 2000 and 2017, Region 10 Symposium (TENSYMP) 2014 and Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (R10 HTC) 2020. As a result of these activities, the image and presence of IEEE in the Malaysian public and in Region 10 has enhanced tremendously. IEEE Malaysia Section has received several accolades from Region 10. It was awarded Region 10 Distinguished Section Award in 2000 and Region 10 Distinguished Large Section Award in 2006. The Section has also initiated its own conference i.e. Student Conference on Research and Development (SCOReD) in 2001. SCOReD has become a highly successful Asia Pacific regional conference series. Every year, student branches in Malaysia take turns in hosting this conference.

2021 ACTIVITIES

COLLABORATIVE NETWORKING

IEEE Malaysia Section held an online collaboration meeting with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Malaysia Network on 15th June 2021. This meeting was held to discuss potential collaborations between IEEE Malaysia Section and IET Malaysia Network. The collaborations include but are not limited to joint technical talks, conference organization and joint awards. IET Malaysia Network was represented by its chairman Ir. Amir Farid Abdul Majid and his team while IEEE Malaysia Section were represented by its Chair, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Md Pauzi Abdullah and his team. IEEE Malaysia is looking forward to more collaborations with other professional bodies to broaden their networking. .

STUDENT LEADERSHIP CAMP

IEEE Malaysia Section Student Leadership Camp 2021 is one of the flagship events of IEEE Malaysia Section under the Student Activities Committee (SAC). This event is organized annually and all Student Branches (SB), Student Branch Chapters (SBC), and Students Affinity Groups (AG) are invited to attend. A total of 30 SBs, 17 SBCs, and 5 AGs were invited to the 2021 edition. In this leadership camp, several topics were presented as follows:  

·       IEEE Malaysia Section and Volunteering Within

·       Introduction to IEEE Malaysia Section SBs, SBCs and AGs

·       Awareness of IEEE Membership Benefits

·       Awards and Fund Opportunities

·       Volunteers Tools (vTools)

·       Membership Development – Best Practices

·       Student Branch Best Practices – Example

SENIOR MEMBER ELEVATION WORKSHOP

This program is a hands-on workshop, wherein the participants are exposed to filling up the IEEE senior membership application form with the guidance of facilitators. The program was facilitated by Dr. Nordin Ramli and Dr. Rosmiwati Mokhtar with the assistance from Prof. Zuhaina Zakaria. Two breakout sessions were held where participants were guided by these facilitators. IEEE Malaysia plans to conduct this workshop regularly in order to assist chapters in encouraging more members to apply for senior membership.
