IEEE WA Section’s 2021 Student Competition (1st June 2021)

IEEE Western Australia (WA) Section hosted their 2021 Student Competition on 1st June 2021 at the campus of Murdoch University. In total, 6 students from 4 WA universities had participated in this contest. All students presented a project of their choice in 5 minutes and then answered the questions of the technical panelists. A group of IEEE members from universities and industry were the panelists for this competition. Mr. Remember Samu and Steward Qie won the winner and runner-up awards for this competition.

IEEE WA Section’s 2021 Mid-year Social and Networking Dinner (6th July 2021)

IEEE WA Section hosted their 2021 mid-year social and networking dinner on 6th July 2021 at Beiyrut restaurant. This social event has been going on in WA for several years, this year, 50 IEEE members and guests attended the event. This was a great opportunity for some members to catch up and meet each other and networking after several months. This year’s event also included a prize ceremony at the beginning of the event, in which A/Professor Farhad Shahnia (the Chair of the WA Section) announced the winners of the Section’s 2021 Student Competition.

IEEE WA Section’s Special Roadmap Workshop with New Committee Members (27th July 2021)

This year, the Chair, Vice-chair and Chair-elect of the WA Section arranged a special roadmap workshop with the Section’s 7 new Committee members who had joined the Committee in 2020 or 2021. This workshop was held on 27th July 2021 at Cannington Leisureplex and the new members were invited to share their ideas about the activities of the WA Section, and their suggestions on how the IEEE WA Section should proceed to further benefit the local IEEE members and attract more members especially from the local Industry. Some interesting suggestions came from this workshop which will be put forward for approval by the Section in the next committee meeting.

IEEE WA Section’s 2021 Annual Technical Forum (3rd August 2021)

IEEE WA Section hosted their 2021 Annual Technical Forum, focused on Technology for Tomorrow, on 3rd August 2021 at the ‘Double Tree’ by Hilton Waterfront. This cross-disciplinary technical event has started for the first time in WA this year. This event was again a great opportunity for about 30 IEEE student members, members and guests attending the event to hear talks from local experts in various areas under the umbrella of IEEE. The IEEE WA Section would like to make special thanks to the forum’s invited speakers Jeremy Parry (Director of DLS Pathology Services and Consultant Pathologist at Western Diagnostic Pathology), Benjamin Dias (Technical Solutions Consultant – Process Automation, Honeywell Ltd.), Glenn Butcher (technology company builder with 25 years’ experience in senior management at Amazon, Atlassian, and diverse technology startups) and Dr. Amar El-Sallam (Chief Science Officer & Co-Founder, Advanced Human Imaging). Some interesting proposals were presented in the following Section Committee meeting and they were approved.

Winner of the IES Best Chapter Award 2021 – Western Australia IES Chapter

The Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Western Australia Chapter has won the 2021 IES Best Chapter Award. This is a very prestigious award, awarded by the IES Awards and Honors Committee to the Western Australia Chapter for demonstrating significant membership growth and benefit plans by the chapter for members. The Chapter was formed in early 2019 by A/Professor Farhad Shahnia and Dr. Hai Wang from Murdoch University who have respectively led the Chapter in 2019 and 2020. The Chapter has technically sponsored 2 international conferences of ICPES 2019 and SGES 2020 and various other events. In 2020, the Chapter had also won the Most Active Chapter Award of the Western Australia Section for membership growth. The IEEE Western Australia Section congratulates all members Dr. Amirmehdi Yazdani, A/Professor Farhad Shahnia, Dr. Hai Wang, Dr. Moayed Moghbel, Dr. MD Shoeb, Dr. Adnan Hayat, Remember Samu, SM Ferdous, Christoph Tuettemann and Jinping Zhao.
