The IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) – Student Activity Committee (SAC) Meeting for the year 2023 took place on the 6th and 7 May 2023 at the Hilton Atlanta in Georgia. The meeting was attended by distinguished members, including Prof. Jennifer Dela Cruz and Ms. Warunika Hippola, the SAC Chair and Student Representative of IEEE Region 10, respectively. Prof. Lance Fung, the director of IEEE Region 10, also graced the event as a special guest.
The two-day meeting commenced with a warm welcome from SAC Chair Ruben Barrera, followed by introductions of all the participants. Key topics discussed included the SAC’s theme and goals for 2023, focusing on governance and maximizing the utilization of Collabratec.
The MGA Vice President shared insights into his priority projects, such as the Relationship Management Solution, Sections Congress, and the transition of file storage to Collabratec. Additionally, changes in the vTools platform were highlighted, showcasing its enhanced features for automating officer reporting during elections.
The meeting witnessed productive discussions on membership development, member engagement, and various programs like IEEExtreme, Future50 discount, Virtual Speakers Bureau, and MGA SAC Awards. Prof. Lance Fung, in his guest speech, shed light on the challenges faced by university students and proudly presented IEEE Region 10’s flagship events. He also shared plans for realigning the Asia-Pacific region into Regions 10 and 11 by 2028, which sparked interest among the attendees.
Each representative from different regions had the opportunity to present their plans and achievements, making the session highly insightful. Region 10’s report highlighted successful executions of the SAC Awards, funding initiatives, contests, and the triumph of IEEE Education Week 2023. They also revealed their plans to organize a flagship event for student leaders in Region 10, promising an exciting future for student activities.
As a special highlight, the delegates of the MGA SAC Meeting had the privilege of attending the 2023 IEEE Vision, Innovation, and Challenges Summit (IEEE VIC Summit) and Honors Ceremony held on May 5th, 2023. The pre-event meet and greet at the Georgia Aquarium on the evening of May 4th set a glamorous tone for the summit. Prominent personalities from IEEE were in attendance, making it an enriching experience for all participants.
