Singapore National Engineers Day (NED) Virtual Seminar

Prepared by: Leo Hwa Chiang, IEEE Singapore Office

Since 2010, the Singapore National Engineers Day (NED) has ignited passion and curiosity in engineering amongst thousands of students in Singapore.  This 12th edition of Singapore’s biggest festival is organized by the Institute of Engineers Singapore (IES) with the support of IEEE Singapore Section, to celebrate the achievements of engineers, to inspire young engineers and intrigue the young generation in engineering.

NED was held from 9th to 20th November 2021. A series of fun and enriching activities were organized to demonstrate the ingenuity of engineers and the myriad of possibilities of an engineering career. This year, IES and IEEE Singapore Section organized a virtual seminar under the theme “Engineering for the New Normal” with 65 participants in attendance. During the virtual seminar, the Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economics Policies, Mr. Heng Swee Keat attended as the Guest-of-Honour, to officially open the World Engineers Summit 2021 at Resort World Sentosa. Around 1,000 participants were present with majority tuning in online via Zoom and YouTube for the live streaming.

Along with the senior officials from government agencies, Mr Steve Welby, IEEE Executive Director & COO was also invited as one of the honourable speakers, to speak on IEEE global presence as the world’s largest technical professional organization and her contribution to the pandemic response. This seminar has brought the engineering community together to spread an insightful view on engineering towards post-pandemic and to contribute to a sustainable future through innovative technologies.
