To celebrate IEEE Day 2023, IEEE Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Subsection collaborated with the Jawatankuasa Mahasiswa Kolej Siswa Jaya UTM Kuala Lumpur and Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Tembak 2 to host a successful Paper Plane Competition on October 14, 2023, at Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Tembak 2, Kuala Lumpur. The event aimed to foster student creativity, providing a platform to showcase innovative designs and aeronautical skills while promoting STEM education.
The event attracted the participation of 40 enthusiastic primary school children, aged 11 to 12, alongside 20 university undergraduates, IEEE student members, members, and school teachers, creating an engaging and vibrant atmosphere.
To ignite the participants’ interest in aeronautical engineering and design, Muhamad Sharifuddin from IEEE Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Subsection, delivered an enlightening briefing on aviation history and principles at the start of the event. This was followed by an exhilarating session where the attendees were split into smaller groups, mentored by university undergraduates, to craft and launch their own paper planes. The distance covered by each plane during flight contributed to the group’s final score with the student who flew the furthest winning the Longest Distance Flight Award.
As the competition drew to a close, the top three groups were recognized for their outstanding performances and presented with well-deserved prizes, adding an extra layer of excitement and achievement to the day’s events. The event concluded with all participants coming together to commemorate IEEE Day, sharing in the joy and camaraderie as they united to cut the celebratory cakes.
