Message from the IEEE R10 Director-Elect

It is a pleasure to welcome the IEEE community across Region 10 to the first edition of our regional newsletter for 2026. What makes our region truly distinctive is not only its scale in terms of diversity and membership but also the passion and dedication of volunteers who actively build technical communities in universities, research laboratories, industries, and local sections.

Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to interact with many IEEE members across the region. One thing that consistently stands out is the strong sense of professional community that IEEE fosters. Whether it is a student branch organizing a technical workshop, a chapter hosting an expert lecture, or a section bringing together academia and industry through conferences and seminars, these activities reflect the spirit that has sustained IEEE for decades professionals coming together to learn, collaborate, and contribute.

As we begin 2026, IEEE continues to expand opportunities for members to engage in meaningful ways. The IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Board plays a central role in supporting the global network of sections, chapters, and student branches. Region 10 hosts some of the most active student communities in IEEE, and their initiatives—from hackathons and technical competitions to industry interactions—play an important role in shaping the professional journey of young engineers.

At the same time, IEEE provides opportunities for volunteers to contribute beyond their local units through participation in global committees, working groups, and strategic initiatives. Engagement at this level helps ensure that the perspectives and experiences from our region contribute to shaping the future direction of IEEE programs worldwide.

Another important dimension of IEEE’s work is the growing emphasis on technology for societal benefit. Programs such as EPICS in IEEE, SIGHT, and Tech4Good provide platforms for members to apply engineering expertise to address real community challenges. These initiatives support projects in areas such as healthcare technologies, environmental monitoring, disaster resilience, and sustainable development. Region 10 has been particularly active in humanitarian technology initiatives. The latest examples are the exemplary works our volunteers did in the disaster fronts in Philippines and Sri Lanka last year.

Across the technical landscape, IEEE is also focusing on areas that are shaping the future of engineering and innovation. Rapid advances in artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and sustainable technologies are redefining industries and societies. Through the work of IEEE societies and the Technical Activities Board (TAB), members have opportunities to collaborate on research, standards development, and knowledge exchange in these evolving domains.

IEEE conferences remain an essential platform for this exchange of ideas. In our region, flagship events such as TENCON, TENSYMP and R10 HTC bring together researchers, industry practitioners, and students to present new work, discuss emerging technologies, and build collaborative networks. Increasingly, these conferences are also incorporating industry sessions, innovation showcases, and interdisciplinary discussions that connect research outcomes with real-world impact.

Education and lifelong learning remain equally important priorities for IEEE. Through initiatives led by the Educational Activities Board (EAB), IEEE continues to expand resources that support professional development and continuing education. These programs help members stay current with emerging technologies while strengthening the technical and leadership skills needed in today’s rapidly evolving professional landscape.

Within Region 10, the activities of Young Professionals and Women in Engineering affinity groups continue to enrich the IEEE experience by fostering mentorship, collaboration, and professional networking. Their initiatives create valuable spaces where early-career engineers and experienced professionals can exchange perspectives and ideas.

Looking ahead, 2026 offers many opportunities for IEEE members in Region 10 to deepen their engagement, initiate new activities, and strengthen collaboration across disciplines and geographies. The continued growth of our region reflects the efforts of countless volunteers who believe in the value of professional community and in the potential of technology to improve lives. I encourage our Sections to collaborate with the Region-10 committees to develop impactful programs that serve both our members and the broader communities we support.
