IEEE Region 10 and IEEE HAC have teamed up to hold a special Call for Proposals in Region 10 to support initiatives that use innovative technology to address the COVID-19 problem while putting safety first. Awards of up to USD500 were given to the selected projects that came up with an impressive strategy addressing the real needs of a local community or local stakeholder organization. With 70 proposals that came from 17 Sections & 7 countries, 56 projects were successfully submitted, out of which 27 convincing and innovative projects were awarded the grant. IEEE REGION-10 HTA HIGHLIGHT VIDEO CONTEST

The IEEE R10 HTA Highlight Video contest was an opportunity for all IEEE R10 members, particularly SIGHT members, to practice and improve project design and visual presentation skills in a precise way suitable for a wider audience, as well as to display the high quality of their designed projects at the regional level. This year, the contest was conducted under the theme “Regional Representative Humanitarian Projects Showcase”. The contest was announced on the 9th April 2021 and a total of 12 videos were received. The first three winners were presented with e-certificates and the videos were shared on the R10 HTA website (https://hac.ieeer10.org/ieee-region-10-hta-awards).

1st prize: “Smart Classroom Among the Woods” presented by Abba Mathews, Alen Salu and Navaneeth V Nair from Kerala Section

2nd prize: “Advanced Touchless Sanitizer Dispenser” by Malhar Deshkar, Monika Bhole, Nagesh Udasi, from Bombay Section

3rd prize: “Portable Intelligent COVID-19 Prevention Screener” done by Mohd Fitri Mohd Yakub, Mohd Zamzuri Ab Rashid, Muhamad Sharifuddin Abd Rahim from Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur Subsection.

R10 HTA ORIENTED PROJECT ENABLER (TENHOPE2021)

TENHOPE2021 is a humanitarian project support fund in R10 that aims to encourage and equip IEEE R10 volunteers to carry out and support meaningful humanitarian technology and sustainable development initiatives at the local level. It also allows IEEE members and R10 participants to collaborate with NGOs and other organizations in order to advance technology in support of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Region 10. A generous grant of USD2000 will be funded to the selected project that incorporates sustainable development and addressing the areas of food security, infection control devices, sustainable power sources, water, sanitation and hygiene, medical devices, personal protective equipment (PPE), information and communications technology (ICT) and engineering and technological supports in response to the global pandemic COVID-19. 39 proposals from across 9 different countries in Region 10 were received, unfortunately no proposals were selected for the award this year.

On 5th June 2021, World Environment day is celebrated happily across the globe. This year, IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Activities Committee with support from IEEE Region 10 Women in Engineering Committee conducted an interesting grand event on the topic “Ecosystem Restoration with IEEE HAC”. The event created an opportunity to become aware of the issues faced by Doctors in the face of this pandemic and the impact it has on the environment. The welcome keynote and overview of R10 IEEE HTA was presented by Mr. Deepak Mathur, IEEE Region 10 Director and Saurabh Soni, Member of Region 10 HTA. The overview of HAC proposals was then presented by Pia Torres, Project Support & Oversight Ad-Hoc Committee Chair. The session on WIE support for Humanitarian Activity was presented by Emi Yano, Chair of IEEE Region 10 WIE Committee. Dr. Divya Kumar, MBBS, DNB Fellowship in Art delivered a keynote talk on “Societal issues in Healthcare Industry”. An “Overview about RSPO & Environmental Issues” was presented by Preethi Jain, Outreach and Engagement Asia Pacific at RSPO. The event was moderated by Pooja Sharma, Pooja Dhende, Monica Bhorle & Maharsh Patel. Ramneek Kalra, IEEE impact creator delivered the vote of thanks.

HUMANITARIAN OUTREACH CAMP 1.0

IEEE Region 10 HTA Committee in association with IEEE Indian Council organized the “Humanitarian Outreach Camp 1.0” on 10th June 2021. The event was organized to discuss in detail about the call for proposals focused on addressing local needs during COVID-19 times by IEEE R10 and IEEE HAC. Over 450 participants from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Peru, Australia, Thailand, Japan and Malaysia participated in this outreach camp.

IEEE Region 10 HTA Committee organized the “Humanitarian Outreach Camp 2.0” on 26th June 2021. The event was conducted on the topic of “How to write an effective proposal”. Dr. Vijayalakshmi Biradar (Past chair of IEEE WIE Hyderabad Section and Past Recipient of IEEE Sight HAC project) from Hyderabad Section was the keynote speaker of this outreach camp. The event had over 150 participants from IEEE Region 10 that include UAE, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan Bangladesh & Sri Lanka. This event was organized in collaboration with the IEEE YESIST12 team.

On 11th April 2021, IEEE Region 10 HTA Committee in association with IEEE SIGHT Bombay Section organized “LEARN FROM THE LEADER’S”, an event that elaborated on digital dependency, creating opportunities for innovative technology and sustainable development. The honorable guests of the event were Mr. Deepak Mathur, Director of IEEE Region 10 and Dr. Jing Dong, Chair of IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Activities. Mr. Dinesh Israni, Director, ISBM University at Gariyabandh, Chhattisgarh and Lincoln University, Malaysia was the keynote speaker of this dynamic event.

IEEE R10 HTA Felicitated the 2021 HTA Award Recipients

IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Activities Committee supported various new initiatives under the leadership of Prof. Jing Dong and the guidance of Prof. Prakash Lohana (Advisor, IEEE R10 HTA) and Mr. Deepak Mathur (Director, IEEE Region 10). On 14th September 2021 (6PM-7.30PM IST), the IEEE Region 10 HTA Committee organized a wonderful virtual felicitation evening to congratulate the 2021 R10 HTA awards winners. The event was privileged to have Holly Schneider Brown, Director, Public Imperatives and Corporate Development, IEEE Corporate Activities and Prof. Jing Dong to grace the opening and share some of the HTA initiatives and activities.
