2021 R10 Special Recognition to SAC Volunteers

Gaurav Sonawane is a student at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Sirmaur, India. He holds an engineering degree in Electronics and Telecommunication from Institute of Information Technology, Pune (Autonomous under UGC). He also has an Indian Patent in an interdisciplinary field and is a passionate innovator and leader.

This year, Gaurav got a special mention as the R10 SAC Outstanding Volunteer Award from the IEEE R10 Director for his outstanding contribution and services for Student Activities Committee programs and the IEEE Pune Section.

In his tenure as Section Student Representative at IEEE Pune Section, he conducted new initiatives such as Pune Congress and demonstrated administrative abilities, leadership skills, and commitment for the technical development of engineers and students at large. He was instrumental in all the IEEE HAC projects and activities at IEEE Pune Section. He had extended his significant support in the IEEE foundation activities under the Special Interest Group for Affordable Agriculture. His key projects are automated mushroom farming, solar plant implementation in rural areas, automation of age-old water irrigation systems and UAVs for precise agriculture. He also received the IEEE India Council Outstanding Student Award 2019.

He has had an extraordinary journey from becoming the Chairman at the AISSMS IOIT Student Branch to R10 Young Professional core team member in the last four years. In 2019, he secured 2nd position at the International Project Competition at Stamford University, Hua-Hin Campus, Thailand, for the project titled “Non-hazardous Sanitary Pad Decomposition System.” According to him, working closely with the top industrialists, academicians, and researchers at national and international levels gives him a birds-eye view of tackling the challenges. IEEE is now a second home for him and has shaped his personality to what it is today.

Gaurav is continuously moving ahead and is open to collaborating for a better tomorrow with the mission of advancing technology for humanity. IEEE Asia Pacific (R10) wishes him the best for all his future endeavours.
