Why IEEE Sections Must Follow IEEE Branding Guidelines

Vijay S Paul, Chair, IEEE R10 Information Management Committee

As an organization with thousands of members across different regions, maintaining a consistent and professional brand identity is essential. To ensure a unified presence, IEEE has developed comprehensive branding guidelines that Sections and organizational units (OUs) must follow when creating communications and promotional materials. These guidelines streamline branding elements such as logos, fonts, and colors, reinforcing IEEE’s identity and recognition worldwide.

The Importance of Brand Consistency

A strong and cohesive brand identity plays a critical role in shaping how IEEE is perceived by its members, industry partners, and the public. When all IEEE Sections adhere to the same branding standards, they help:

  • Strengthen Recognition – A unified visual identity makes it easier for members and stakeholders to instantly recognize IEEE, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted voice in technology.
  • Enhance Professionalism – Consistency in branding projects a polished and credible image, ensuring that IEEE materials reflect the high standards of the organization.
  • Improve Engagement – Clear and recognizable branding makes IEEE’s communications more impactful, increasing engagement among members, volunteers, and external audiences.

Key Branding Elements for IEEE Sections

To maintain uniformity, all IEEE Sections and Sub-Sections must use the approved branding elements:

  • Fonts – Only Formata or Calibri fonts should be used in creating Section identifiers (logos). Different font weights can be applied, but alternative typefaces are not permitted.
  • Colour Palette – Sections should adhere to the official IEEE colour scheme, including IEEE blue, cyan, black, or white. These colours help create a consistent look across different communications.
  • Logo Usage – The IEEE Master Brand must always be used correctly, with proper spacing, size, and placement. A horizontal or vertical line must separate the IEEE Master Brand from the Section or Sub-Section name. Additionally, unauthorized symbols or icons should not be added to Section identifiers.

For example, if your Section logo is of the following format,

then the words “IEEE” should ideally be in Formata/Calibri font, and should not be cropped off from the IEEE Masterbrand logo. Similarly, the name of your Section/Sub-Section should also be in either of these two fonts.

It is recommended that all Section logos follow one of the following formats, without the addition of any other symbols or shapes.

Please refer to IEEE Brand Identity Guidelines for detailed information on these and more.
